Nearly 20,000 Bottles of Popular Juice Have Been Recalled in 11 States

When you hear the words “Dole” and “fruit” together, you might instantly picture a tart cocktail finished with its iconic 100% pineapple juice—a fan favorite since 1933. But the recognizable brand has expanded its product lineup over the years, and on September 11, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first warned that 1,599 cases of Dole Apple Juice were recalled in 11 states: Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, Texas, Tennessee, New Mexico, and Oklahoma.

Now, an October 16 update from the governmental agency recognizes the recall event—with each case containing 12 apple juice bottles for a total of 19,188 units—as a Class II incident, defining this as “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

As for the recalling reason, FDA reports that a “manufacturing process deviation occurred which may cause spoilage or microbial contamination and affect shelf stability.”

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), “Various factors cause food spoilage, making items unsuitable for consumption. Light, oxygen, heat, humidity, temperature and spoilage bacteria can all affect both safety and quality of perishable foods. When subject to these factors, foods will gradually deteriorate.”

As further noted by the USDA: You may be able to recognize the signs of food spoilage by changes in its appearance—specifically if you notice a “change in color, a change in texture, an unpleasant odor, or an undesirable taste.” However, some food that has spoiled or become contaminated will show no detectable signs of danger.
